HOW RELEVANT ARE YOUR GOALS?

At various points in our lives, we set goals and most times we are very optimistic that we are going to achieve those goals. We have great dreams for the future and a burning desire to be great but sometimes we find it very difficult to achieve some goals we set for ourselves.

I have set several goals in my life; I achieved some and could not achieve some goals.

We are asked to set SMART goals but does that always guarantee that all your goals will be achieved?

What is your attitude when you fail to achieve your goals? Do you stop setting goals?

There’s a young man called KC who read Petroleum Engineering and graduated on top of his class. One of his goals was to get a job in one of the biggest Oil and Gas Companies in Nigeria. To him, it must be the top Oil and Gas Companies or nothing else. Upon completion of NYSC, he made several applications to his dream companies but all efforts proved abortive.

At some point, he was frustrated, disillusioned and despair set in. He imagined how some of the friends he taught in school are crushing it while his life is “wasting away”. He was in this state for about 18 months until one day he stumbled on a book which transformed his life. The book opened his eyes to the potentials innate in him. A new chapter opened in his life and he discovered that life does not start and end in Oil and Gas Companies. He decided to explore business.

While in the University, he had an interest in Computer Science. Though, not his core area of study, he learnt how to code and design websites. He was techy savvy. He took some training in Software engineering and got some foreign partners to start a Tech Company. The success he has recorded so far is a story for another day.

Now, why was he dying for Oil company job? He felt that was the only way he could make money and live a meaningful life.

How relevant are the goals you set for yourself? What are the reasons behind your goals? Do your goals resonate with your core values and beliefs? When we pick goals that go contrary to who we are, we find it much more difficult to follow through.

I’m crushing on one of my first quarter goals. The Legal Business Conference 2020 was aimed at educating Lawyers on how to use technology tools to advance legal practice. It was a huge success and I’m giving myself kudos for achieving that great feat.

When you achieve your goal, always remember to reward yourself.
